A Full Service Marketing Agency Creating Social Media with a Soul
My first introduction to Allison’s storytelling and brand awareness was via a poignant and short-charactered text message that read, “I have red hair and I’m wearing a tiger-print dress, you can’t miss me.” It was in that moment (before I’d ever considered how two strangers were going to recognize each other) when I learned there are women who know who they are, and women who can package this brand awareness into a concise and clever approach. Allison Day, owner of Good Things Done Right––a full service marketing agency specializing in social media, web design, influencer campaigns, email marketing, and SEO––is both.
It’s the mark of a good Creative Director, Allison’s ability to distill a brand’s essence into succinct stories that achieve both interest and engagement through social and digital campaigns, and if you’re me, via verbal guideposts for discovering a new friend in a 4,000 square foot coffee shop. And while she’s carved through the overgrown trails macheted by all female entrepreneurs, from imposter syndrome to growing a six-figure business, Allison no longer subscribes to the societal expectation that she disguise her strengths as haphazard coincidences. Instead, she stands out (red hair and all) learning to trust her instincts, her experience, and her team as they welcome new clients eager to communicate in a social-language every small business fumbles through without phonics or flashcards.
In 2015 Allison established GTDR as a response to a successful career working part-time for another social agency; her partner and resident web-guru, Clay Newton, spurring her on. While business owners struggle to understand algorithms, posting, reels, and content marketing, Allison’s agency deciphers and details their unique impact with confidence, growing her client’s platforms and establishing her agency as the chosen digital-partner for small and medium businesses capable of drawing a following, but more importantly, capable of deriving engagement from audiences with what she describes as, “social media with a soul.”
An hour with Allison over an iced-tea and I was inspired not only by her proficiencies and professionalism, but by her honesty in moments when my humility read as timidity. “I think you’re underselling yourself,” she responded confidently, as we spoke back and forth on outset entrepreneurship. “My belief in my business, in social media, was solidified after volunteering for a Napa Valley mayoral campaign in 2020. I’d already started my business, GTDR, but my involvement in that project, in driving the social media strategy and execution for the candidate, translated into an impact and personal investment in my community that ultimately gave meaning to my work beyond a single social-post. I began to see the multitudes of my mission and the impact my team could provide to small towns. That experience implanted me into the city I call home and returned a sense of purpose to why we all started using social in the first place––which was to feel connected.”
Allison’s superpowers, while manifesting as social-storytelling, unearth the deeper motivations behind her client’s offerings, concerned with growth not for followers’ sake, but for community’s sake. She and her Director of Content & Strategy, Dria Butler, are able to relay the vision their clients foresee, turning analogue experiences (like in-person dining, shopping, travel, and tourism) into digital desires. “Social is a priority, and growth is guaranteed for those who prioritize this tool with an agency,” says Dria, “But the purpose of social media is to show your customer how it feels to experience your business; to remain curious, connected, and to understand your ‘why.’”
GTDR, while gratefully serving an established clientele in Napa Valley, has a foothold in Nevada County as locals and members of the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, hoping to create the same snackable, scroll-stopping content for the founders, owners, and practitioners who make up our small-business economy. “Nevada County feels fresh,” says Allison, “but I think it can appear to some as misunderstood. I’d love to change the narrative for anyone who sees a straight line from Sacramento to Tahoe. There’s life here, it has a spiritual draw, and you don’t have to be intensely outdoorsy to enjoy the scenery. I’ve worked to affirm other small towns in this area as destination locations. I would be excited to meet with anyone looking to establish, extend, or elevate their online presence.”
And for those wondering, “The name was an early description of a business I didn’t yet own,” says Allison, of her company’s title, “but knew one day I wanted to be a part of. How simple is that really? The idea of doing good things right. It’s my belief in how all forms of business should be conducted.”
